Your First Visit & Ongoing Care
What can you expect on your first visit?
General Dentistry:
At your first visit, we will start by reviewing your full medical and dental history and discussing any concerns or symptoms you may be experiencing.
Your appointment will typically include:
- Full-mouth X-rays to assess overall oral health and establish a baseline
- A comprehensive dental exam, including evaluation of your teeth, existing dental work, and gum health
- An oral cancer screening, which includes an assessment of your head, neck, salivary glands, and lymph nodes
- A professional dental cleaning by one of our skilled hygienists, including plaque and tartar removal, polishing, flossing, and a fluoride treatment (if recommended)
Before you leave, we will review any findings and develop a treatment plan tailored to your oral health goals, whether that’s preventative care, restorative treatment, or cosmetic enhancements like whitening or veneers.
Pediatric Dentistry:
For children, a positive first dental experience sets the tone for lifelong oral health. Our team is specially trained to provide gentle, fun, and stress-free care for infants, toddlers, children, and teens.
During your child’s first visit, you can expect:
- A warm, kid-friendly introduction to the dental environment to help ease anxiety
- A review of your child’s medical and dental history
- Digital X-rays, if appropriate, to check for cavities or developmental issues
- A dental exam, including assessment of teeth, gums, bite, and jaw growth
- A thorough but gentle cleaning, including plaque removal, polishing, and fluoride application to strengthen developing teeth
- Oral hygiene education tailored to your child’s age, including brushing and flossing tips, nutrition guidance, and habit counseling (e.g., thumb-sucking or pacifier use)
We will also review growth and development milestones and answer questions you have about teething, sealants, spacing, or your child’s future orthodontic needs.
Orthodontics:
Your first orthodontic consultation is the first step toward a straighter, healthier smile. Whether you are exploring braces, clear aligners (like Invisalign®), or early intervention for your child, we will guide you every step of the way.
During your consultation, we will complete:
- A review of your medical and dental history
- A full orthodontic evaluation, including digital x-rays, photographs, and/or 3D scans
- An assessment of bite alignment, jaw development, facial symmetry, and spacing or crowding issues
- A detailed discussion of treatment options – including metal braces, ceramic braces, or clear aligners – as well as timing, cost, and expected outcomes
Dr. Tatarsky will design a customized orthodontic plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle. We will also review payment options, insurance coverage, and answer all your questions so that you feel confident moving forward.
At what age should my child see an orthodontist for the first time?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, an orthodontist can assess jaw development, bite alignment, and eruption of permanent teeth—even if no treatment is needed right away. Early evaluations allow us to identify potential issues and plan the ideal timing for any future orthodontic care.
How often should you schedule your dental visits?
General Dentistry: The American Dental Association recommends that most adults see the dentist every six months for a check-up and professional cleaning. These regular visits help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues before they become more serious.
If you have specific conditions—such as periodontal disease, frequent cavities, or medical conditions that affect oral health—we may recommend more frequent visits. Our team will assess your individual needs and create a personalized care schedule to maintain your healthy smile.
Pediatric Dentistry: Children should have their first dental visit by age one, or within six months of their first tooth coming in. After that, most children should see the dentist every six months for cleanings, exams, and preventive care like fluoride treatments and sealants.
Some kids may need more frequent visits if they are at higher risk for cavities, have orthodontic needs, or other dental concerns. We will work with you to create a customized schedule based on your child’s age, dental development, and risk factors to promote long-term oral health.
Orthodontics: Once orthodontic treatment begins—whether with braces or clear aligners like Invisalign®—you will typically visit the orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks for progress checks and adjustments. These visits are essential for monitoring tooth movement, ensuring appliances are functioning properly, and making necessary changes to your treatment plan.
I'm pregnant – can I come in for a routine exam and cleaning?
Yes. Maintaining your oral health during pregnancy is especially important, as hormonal chances can increase your risk of gum disease and other dental issues. Before your visit, we kindly ask that you obtain a medical clearance from your OB-GYN to ensure it’s safe for you to receive dental care.
Do I need to maintain routine dental visits if I don't have any symptoms?
Even without symptoms, routine dental exams and cleanings are essential for maintaining optimal oral health. These visits help detect problems in their earliest stages – before symptoms appear – and reduce the risk of new tooth decay or gum disease. Combined with good home care, regular dental visits are the best way to promote a healthy smile for life.
What are signs you should schedule a dental appointment?
While most people need exams and cleanings twice a year, you should schedule an appointment sooner if you experience any dental issues. Signs include tooth pain or sensitivity, bleeding or red gums, damaged restorations, persistent bad breath, dry mouth, facial pain or swelling, sores that won’t heal, or any other concerns. Our team will assess your condition and recommend appropriate treatment.
Everyday Dental Health
How often should I brush and floss my teeth?
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), you should brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Flossing once a day is also recommended to remove plaque and prevent gum disease. These habits help reduce the risk of cavities and supports overall oral health.
How often should I replace my toothbrush?
The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles begin to fray. When the bristles are worn, they become less effective at cleaning the teeth and removing plaque, which can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. It is also advisable to replace your toothbrush after an illness to reduce the chance of reinfection. Making this a regular habit is an important step in maintaining good oral health.
Why are dental cleanings important if I brush and floss at home?
Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, plaque can harden into tartar in areas that are difficult to reach at home. Professional dental cleanings remove tartar, polish teeth, and help prevent gum disease. Cleanings also give your dental team an opportunity to check for issues before they become more serious.
What causes tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity often occurs when enamel becomes worn or when gums recede, exposing the underlying dentin. This can make teeth more reactive to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. Sensitivity can also result from cavities, cracked teeth, or grinding. Your dentist can determine the cause and recommend treatment, which may include desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride applications, or other therapies.
